Career Progression

The following career path outline summarizes how team members are expected to develop professionally during their time at the firm:

New Team Member

We match each team member with a firm buddy who will support their professional and career development with Berris Mangan. A support system is important for team members and vital to the firm.

All new team members spend their first week at the firm being oriented to our firm systems and procedures.

Student

Each new student is asked to complete a practice file to learn our file preparation process. The first four months at Berris Mangan will be a period of adjustment and learning. You will work closely with your mentor during this period. You will learn about firm procedures, software and systems. This involves taking several courses.

The next 18-30 month period will consist of learning professional file preparation and business in general while meeting educational requirements. You may be in a university co-op program or enrolled in the first three years of the C.A. program. We will provide you with ongoing feedback on the development of your professional abilities.

You will be expected to meet chargeable hour goals or file preparation fee recovery rates. During this period, you will work very closely with your mentor.

This period generally spans 12-24 months. The focus will be on developing your technical knowledge and client skills. This will involve taking several courses. We expect that you will be able to complete any file at the firm with little supervision. You will act as a mentor, and you will begin to develop client relationships and consulting skills.

During this period, you will also be expected to meet chargeable hour goals or file preparation fee recovery rates while you are working. We will ensure you have adequate time to study. The firm will pay for exam fees and certain study time.

Manager

As Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining client relationships and developing new business from existing clients. You will be required to develop skills in managing client relationships and supervising various professional team members. You will learn and develop public practice business skills and consult with clients on accounting and business advisory matters. Team members will remain in the Manager role for between one and five years before progressing to Senior Manager.

Senior Manager

As a Senior Manager you will either develop your own book of business or develop new business and services for our existing client base. In this role, we expect you to develop the skills necessary to become a Partner.

In addition to meeting chargeable hour goals and fee recovery rates, you will be responsible for the profitability of your book of business.
